To cultivate an inclusive and welcoming environment for all Cal Poly Pomona campus members, the Office of Inclusive Excellence is initiating the development of “principles of community.”
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the process by responding to a campuswide survey that will be delivered to their email inbox on Jan. 24. Participants will also have the chance to win prizes, such as a Bronco gift card up to $100, Apple AirPod Pro, or even an Apple smart watch.
“Principles of community are a set of guiding values, norms and expectations that an institution such as Cal Poly Pomona establishes to foster a positive and inclusive environment,” said Cindy Pickett, presidential associate for inclusion and chief diversity officer.
“Not only do principles of community articulate shared values and expectations for respectful behavior and communication among faculty, staff and student interactions, they also can serve as a framework to shape how CPP responds to conflicts and disputes,” she continued.
“While we have a rich diversity of backgrounds, cultures and perspectives at CPP, we also have shared values,” said Pickett. “We want to clearly identify those to foster a climate where everyone feels safe, supported and free to express themselves in constructive dialogue.”
Developing the principles will be a collaborative effort across the entire Cal Poly Pomona community — starting with the campuswide survey emailed out on Jan. 24.
A set of principles will be drafted from the survey results and a workgroup will revise the draft based on community and stakeholder feedback. The finalized principles will be communicated to the entire Bronco community through a variety of channels.
