Cal Poly Rose Float Opens 2024 Design Competition

Posted on January 24, 2023

The 2023 Rose Float Road to Reclamation at the Rose Parade.

Have you ever wanted your work to be showcased on international television? This is your chance! Cal Poly Rose Float is currently accepting submissions for the 2024 Rose Float Concept Contest with the parade theme “Celebrating a World of Music.”

This will be Cal Poly Universities 75th float and a historic moment in the team’s legacy. The winning concept will cruise down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena as part of the 135th Rose Parade on Jan. 1, 2024.

The competition is open to anyone on campus and in the community. The deadline to submit entries is Friday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. The winner will have their choice between two tickets to the 2024 Rose Bowl Game or a $500 cash prize.

Alex Aghajanian, the 2024 Tournament of Roses president, selected this year’s parade theme.

“In a world of different cultures, beliefs, hopes, and dreams, one language unites us all — music. The sound, texture, rhythm, form, harmony, and expression meld together to move, soothe, excite and delight the world,” he said.

“From bossa nova to blues, classical to country, metal to mariachi and rock to rap, thousands of genres invite us to become one in celebrating a world of music,” continued Aghajanian, who is an alumnus of Cal Poly Pomona (’79, business administration). Whether near or far, young or old, we invite you to year-long festivities that culminate on New Year’s Day at the Rose Parade. Let the music begin.”

Submissions may be in color or black and white and must be no larger than 11-by-17-inches with the applicant’s name, phone number, and email included. They should only have been submitted to Cal Poly Rose Float and will become property of such once received. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual can submit. Email completed design submissions to calpolyrosefloat1949@gmail.com with the subject line “2024 Concept.”

Students on the Rose Float leadership team from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will review the submissions and vote on the winning concept, which will provide the basis for the 2024 final design.

The Cal Poly Rose Float is the only student-built float in the Rose Parade. The team’s 2023 float, “The Road to Reclamation,” which featured giant snails in a forest ecosystem, claimed the Extraordinaire Trophy for its unique beauty. The recognition brought the team’s total number of Rose Float parade awards to 61 since the campuses began their collaboration in 1949.
