Jamil Zaki, a professor of psychology at Stanford University and the director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Laboratory, will speak about his book “The War for Kindness” on November 16 at 4 p.m.
Registration for the Zoom event is free and open to all members of the Cal Poly Pomona community.
“The War for Kindness” is the 2021-22 Common Read pick for the university. Students in First Year Experience courses, as well as faculty/staff book clubs, have begun to read and discuss the book. Backing up real-world stories with the latest research trends, some of which comes from his lab, Zaki argues that “empathy is not a fixed trait – something we’re born with or not – but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort.”
In addition to Zaki’s visit, FYE is hosting an essay contest that is open to all students. The essay contest closes Nov. 5.
