Sep Eskandari, Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Faculty Excellence, was announced May 5 as the new provost and academic vice chancellor at Montana State University Billings. His last day at Cal Poly Pomona will be June 4.
“The university will deeply miss Sep’s enduring commitment to Cal Poly Pomona, as a student, faculty member and academic leader,” said Provost Sylvia Alva in a message to campus. “Throughout his career Sep has had a profound impact on countless students and colleagues.”
Alva went on to say, “He is a considerate, thoughtful, hard-working and dedicated professional, who always brought a bright and positive outlook and a tremendous depth and breadth of knowledge and skills to the various roles he held on campus. His contributions to Cal Poly Pomona — his professional home for more than 20 years — will be greatly missed.”
Eskandari received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cal Poly Pomona before completing a Ph.D. in physiology at UCLA. After a post-doctoral fellowship in neurobiology, he joined the faculty at Cal Poly Pomona in the Biological Sciences Department in Fall 2000, where he built an externally funded research program resulting in numerous peer-reviewed publications, often with student co-authors.
His previous leadership positions include tenures as Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs, Academic Senate Chair and Chair of the Biological Sciences Department.
Eskandari has been an instrumental member of Alva’s leadership team in the Division of Academic Affairs. A champion for student success and an advocate for faculty, he played an integral role in the development and creation of the university’s Academic Master Plan and, working in concert with colleagues across campus, has helped lead the university-wide pursuit of the ambitious Graduation Initiative 2025 goals.
Likewise, his command and analysis of institutional data helped to establish the clear performance metrics guiding the university’s strategies and decision-making on a range of initiatives critical to our academic mission.
In the coming weeks, the provost will share further information about the search for a new Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Faculty Excellence as well as plans to celebrate and recognize Eskandari’s impressive career and contributions to Cal Poly Pomona prior to his departure.
