Howard E. Evans has announced that he will retire as dean of Cal Poly Pomona’s College of the Extended University and International Center (CEU) on Aug. 1.

Evans started as the dean of CEU in September 2012. During his tenure, the CEU team has developed and offered leading-edge self-support programs that have generated nearly $120 million and increased the CEU building fund from $2.9 million to $11 million.

“Working at CEU has been a wonderful experience, helping to extend CPP-quality educational opportunities beyond the campus boundaries, beyond our traditional student constituencies, and beyond the range of programs that can be funded by the state. The opportunity to showcase Cal Poly Pomona and interact with regional and global partners has been exciting, and I’m proud of the contributions that our CEU team has made to the university,” Dean Evans said.

Prior to his arrival to Cal Poly Pomona, Evans was the founding dean of the School of Engineering and Technology for National University in San Diego where he led the development and offering of seven bachelor’s and eight master’s programs to more than 1,200 active students.

Before working in academia, Evans held senior engineering and management positions at IBM Corporation and was a technology executive at 3M Corporation. He has served on advisory boards and committees for physics and chemical engineering at the University of Texas and the University of Colorado.

Evans received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering science from Caltech in Pasadena. He has published more than 50 articles, given more than 30 conference and university presentations, and received four  patents.

His retirement plans include relocating to St. George, Utah, where he and his wife, Jeannie, will be closer to family. They look forward to traveling, being active in their church, and serving their community, including working with foster youth and with maternal and infant care in underserved populations.
