Geography Professor Emeritus Terence Young, author of “Heading Out: A History of American Camping” shares his insights on camping an author William H.H. Murray’s 1869 book on the recreational activity. “People had camped, but not for recreation,” explains Young, “Military campaigns set up encampments, and that’s probably where the word comes from.”
