The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Music kicks off its spring 2017 concert series this week with an instrumental, progressive rock group that mixes dense melodies with the love of retro video game music.
The members of FeatherWolf, with music department alumnus Felix Salazar, will hit the stage Friday, April 7. Salazar plays guitar for the avant-garde, progressive rock band formed in Los Angeles in 2012. The other band members include Justin Brown, drums; Daniel Corral, keys; Jeremy Kerner, guitar and Eric Kiersnowski, bass.

Tuesday, April 25: Jed Distler Piano Recital
Called “a witty, genial and adventurous pianist and composer” in the New York Times, Jed Distler will present a piano recital “Music by Jed Distler and his mentors Bill Evans, Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn, David Maslanka, Frederic Rzewski, and Andrew Thomas.” Music Professor Nadia Shpachenko will join the guest artist performing duets by Distler and Duke Ellington for the event, which is part of the Spring 2017 Shpachenko & Friends Chamber Music Festival. Thursday, May 4: Lynn McGrath Guitar Recital
Classical guitarist Lynn McGrath will blend her passion for theatre, Spanish language and literature and guitar as she shares the poetry and music of “Platero y yo” with audiences on four continents as both guitarist and theatrical narrator, an unprecedented feat. McGrath will also present a free master class at 3 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall.

Thursday, May 18 and Friday, May 19: 14th Songwriter Showcase
The Songwriter Showcase concerts promote the creativity of Cal Poly Pomona’s student songwriters. They will perform original songs accompanied by producers, musicians and vocalists from the music department. Proceeds from the concert fund scholarships. All concerts are at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets for all events, available online at csupomona.tix.com, are $15 for general admission and $10 for students. They also can be purchased at the Recital Hall Box Office in Building 23, room 188 from Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. and one hour before show time.
