The 12th annual Cyber Security and Awareness Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 25 will offer an opportunity to have fun while gaining valuable knowledge of how to protect oneself from online threats. Hands-on hacking demonstrations will emphasize ways to secure devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT).
“Our goal is to provide the information everyone needs to know in everyday life to be more aware,” says Christopher Laasch, chair of the Cyber Security and Awareness Fair that will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center’s Ursa Major.
The IBM X-Force team will discuss current threats, malware trends and best practices for individuals and organizations in its keynote presentation from noon to 1 p.m. The talk will cover the latest in how firms predict future threats, respond to ongoing security situations and use computing that simulates human thought to enhance their abilities. The first 75 attendees will receive free pizza.
This year’s student poster contest features 39 entries from Cal Poly Pomona and other campuses, and will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Attendees will get to vote for their favorites and enter a raffle for a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. T-shirts will be given to the first 100 people who turn in surveys. Monetary prizes will be awarded the top five posters.
Students will also have the opportunity to meet with representatives from IBM, Tinder and Optiv and give them their resumes. Among the vendors attending are Private Internet Access, a provider of anonymous virtual private network technology; Log Rhythm, a network security company; and Damsels in Distress, which specializes in personal security products.
In addition, there will be entertainment, carnival beads and masks, a DJ and a photo booth. For more information, go to https://www.cpp.edu/~cyberfair.
