Cal Poly Pomona students, alumni, faculty and staff will celebrate everyday heroes once again at Matt’s Run 5K. .
Participants in the 11th annual run/walk, set for Saturday, Oct. 15 at 8 a.m., are encouraged to wear the costume of their favorite superhero. Runners and walkers will traverse the scenic landscape of Cal Poly Pomona, past academic buildings, citrus groves and pastures, ending in front of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center.
Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome. Male and female winners in various age categories will receive awards. The Myers Cup will be presented to the most spirited group or organization that participates in the event. Volunteers also are needed.
Matt’s Run raises scholarship funds for Cal Poly Pomona students who are involved in their community and meet the GPA requirements. Since its inception, the event has generated 60 scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.
Early registration is $35 for adults and $20 for students with school ID. Registration on the day of the event costs $5 more — $40 and $25, respectively. All early registrants will receive a T-shirt. In 2015, almost 600 runners and walkers participated.
Matt’s Run is named after Matt Myers, a Cal Poly Pomona communication student who died in 2005. To honor his memory, Myers’ parents worked with the university to sponsor a run to raise funds for scholarships and celebrate every day heroes. The race is now one of the university’s fall traditions.
