To symbolize that everyone can make a difference, participants in the 10th annual Matt’s Run 5K run/walk are encouraged to wear the costume of their favorite superhero.
At the Oct. 17 event, runners and walkers will traverse the scenic landscape of Cal Poly Pomona, past academic buildings, citrus groves, vineyards and pastures, with close-up views of Arabian horses, farm animals and architecturally stunning buildings that house student research projects. The race ends in front of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center.
Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome. The event starts at 8 a.m. Awards will be given to male and female winners in various age categories. The Myers Cup will be presented to the most spirited group or organization that participates in the event. In 2014, more than 570 runners and walkers participated. The Lakeside Runners Club, from Lakeside Middle School in Perris, won the Myers Cup.
Early registration is $20 for students and $35 for adults. Registration on the day of the event is an additional $5. All early registrants will receive a T-shirt and logo item. Immediately after the race, the Greek Council will barbecue hot dogs for participants.
Matt’s Run raises scholarship funds for Cal Poly Pomona students who are involved in their community, are morally and religiously motivated, and meet the GPA requirements. Since its inception, the event has generated 69 scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,100.
The event is named after Matt Myers, a Cal Poly Pomona communications major, who died in 2005. To honor his memory, Myers’ parents worked with the university to sponsor a run that would raise funds for scholarships. The race is now one of the university’s fall traditions.
After the event, runners, walkers, their friends and family can visit Cal Poly Pomona’s 23rd Annual Pumpkin Festival and the Insect Fair in the Bronco Student Center. The Pumpkin Festival features more than 80,000 pumpkins, a corn maze, petting zoo, horse rides, live music and activities for children. A free shuttle will run from the campus parking lots.
