Grammy Award nominee and pianist Vicki Ray will perform a solo piano concert “Exquisite Corps(e)” on Wednesday, Nov. 5, as part of the Fall 2014 Shpachenko & Friends Chamber Music Festival.
“Exquisite Corps(e)” includes works by a variety of composers, including faculty from CalArts. Violinist Sarah Thornblade will join Ray for the performance of “Trembling” by Morton Subotnick.
The concert will take place in the Music Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Ray also will present a free master class at noon that same day in the recital hall.
Ray is head of the piano department at the California Institute of the Arts, where she has been on the faculty since 1991. She is a founding member of Piano Spheres, an acclaimed series dedicated to exploring the less familiar realms of the solo piano repertoire.
In 2010, Ray was awarded the first Hal Blaine Chair in Music Performance. For the past six years, she also has served on the faculty at the Bang on a Can summer festival at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
Thornblade is the associate principal second violin of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. She is an avid chamber musician and a member of both the Eclipse quartet (a new music string quartet) and X-tet. She also is a faculty member at Pomona College.
Tickets for the recital are $15 general admission and $10 for students. They are available online at https://csupomona.tix.com or at the Music Recital Hall Box Office, Building 24-188, one hour before show time and Monday to Friday from noon to 1 p.m.
