President’s Video Update for May 19

Commencement, the ASI elections, and awards top President Ortiz’s video update this week.

During Commencement next month, the university will recognize valedictorians and McPhee Scholars in each college, and present three Provost’s Award Winners and two honorary doctorates.

The three Provost’s Award Winners are:

  • English and Foreign Languages Professor Alison Baker (Excellence in Teaching)
  • Plant Sciences Professor Dan Hostetler (Excellence in Service)
  • Biological Sciences Professor Angel Valdes (Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities).

Alumnus and entrepreneur Ron Gregoire will receive an honorary doctorate from the College of Business Administration. The College of Engineering will honor Eddy Hartenstein, alumnus, newspaper executive and communications pioneer.

ASI held elections for its 2014-15 student body president and vice president. The winners are James Cox and Louis Harfouche, respectively.

In other news:

  • The Division of Student Affairs was honored as one of the most promising places to work in the student affairs field by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine and the American College Personnel Association.
  • Douglas Freer, vice president of student affairs, received the Excellence in Educational Administration Award at the Inland Valley News awards gala and scholarship dinner.
  • The baseball team finished its season last Friday at the NCAA Division II West Regional with its highest winning percentage since 1983.
  • Austin Allen, Justin Ellerbee and Jessica Ellerbee will compete at the NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships on Saturday, May 24.
  • On Thursday, the Center for Community Engagement will host a Volunteer Fair in University Park. More than 30 nonprofit and volunteer organizations will attend.
