President Ortiz takes time during his Thanksgiving week video update to talk about the spirit of giving at Cal Poly Pomona.
The president hailed students and staff who are working together with the Asian & Pacific Islander Student Center and the Cal Poly Federal Credit Union to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. The center is collaborating with other organizations on a donation drive to send clothing, canned goods and other supplies to the Philippines. The credit union has created an account for cash donations through Angels of Hope, a nonprofit organization assisting in relief efforts.
Also receiving kudos are the hundreds of faculty and staff members who have contributed to Cal Poly Pomona’s fundraising efforts. They include Reggie Keys and Sam Berry, two longtime custodians in University Housing Services. They each have donated $5 a month through payroll deduction to the Black Faculty & Staff Association Scholarship Fund.
The president also hailed the men’s cross-country team for its finest season in 16 years. The team placed eighth at nationals in Spokane, Wash., this past weekend, and John Carrell was named All American.
President Ortiz concluded by thanking students, faculty, staff and supporters of Cal Poly Pomona and wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
