Kellogg Drive to Close for Memorial Bicycle Ride

CPP News

Kellogg Drive will be closed briefly Thursday afternoon for a memorial bicycle ride for Ivan Arturo Aguilar.

The closure will take place from approximately 12:30 to 12:50 p.m. between Red Gum Lane and the traffic circle in Innovation Village. University Police will establish detours. Motorists are advised to use University Drive to access campus during and around those times. Significant delays are expected for those using the Temple Avenue/South Campus Drive  entrance to campus.

Various student organizations coordinated the ride in memory of Aguilar, the 21-year-old communication student who died Feb. 28 after a motorist struck him while he rode his bicycle along Kellogg Drive. Participants in the memorial will meet at 11:30 a.m. in the University Quad. At noon they will head to a memorial site at the bus stop across from the Visitor Information Center. A silent bike ride commences from the bus stop to the roundabout at Innovation Village and back.

Counseling Services will offer support to members of the campus community who might want to talk after the memorial ride. Debriefing groups are available at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Counseling Services in Building 66. No appointment is needed.

Members of the Cal Poly Pomona community have come together to support the Aguilar family in other ways.

Cal Poly Pomona students have started an online campaign to raise money to help the family with funeral expenses. To contribute online, go to https://www.giveforward.com/helpingivanaguilar. Memorial T-shirts are expected to be sold Thursday.

In addition, the Cal Poly Pomona Credit Union has set up a special account to accept donations for the Aguilar family. Donors can give cash or a check. Credit union customers can make an electronic transfer. The credit union is located in Building 35. For more information, call (909) 869-6884.

The Yoga Club has also planned a “Yoga for Ivan” fundraiser from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bronco Student Center, Andromeda A/B, with proceeds going to the Aguilar family.

Memorial services for Aguilar are pending. Cards can be sent to the Aguilar family — parents Raul and Argelia, sibilings Alix, Adrian and Alan — at 385 N. Rockvale Ave. #25, Azusa, CA 91702. You may also share stories about Ivan with his family via email at Choco3659@gmail.com.
