A Cal Poly Pomona student died Thursday, Feb. 28, after being struck by a car as he rode his bicycle along Kellogg Drive.
The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m. near the bridge that passes over Eucalyptus Lane.
Ivan Arturo Aguilar, a 21-year-old communication student, was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
“This is a tragic day for the Cal Poly Pomona community. We are deeply saddened by the death of one our students, Ivan Arturo Aguilar. We extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family during this painful time,” said University President Michael Ortiz.
At the request of university police, the Pomona Police Department is handling the investigation into the accident and interviewing witnesses.
The collision caused the closure of Kellogg Drive between South Campus Drive and Red Gum Lane. Kellogg Drive is expected to remain closed into Thursday night, and reopen by Friday morning. During the closure, motorists are asked to use University Drive to enter campus.
Due to the seriousness of the incident, the university is offering counseling services to those who witnessed the accident.
In addition, Counseling Services will be
offering several Debriefing Groups that are open to all faculty, staff and
students. The sessions will be in the Bookstore Building 66, Room 116, on Friday, March 1 at the following times:
- 9 a.m.to 10 a.m. (1 group)
- 12p.m. to 1 p.m. (2 groups)
- 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. (2 groups)
- 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. (3 groups)
