Following consultations and deliberations with a variety of campus constituents, Provost Marten denBoer announced that the fine arts option in the art department will discontinue. Fine arts courses will still be offered, allowing fine arts majors and other students to complete their degrees.
Art department faculty members have been asked to take the lead in developing new ideas for a fine arts curriculum that may take the form of a minor, certificate program or a degree emphasis.
“There is no doubt that fine arts has a place at a polytechnic university such as Cal Poly Pomona,” denBoer says. “The reality, however, is that our university no longer has the level of state support needed to maintain a quality degree-level fine arts option while also investing in programs that have demonstrated greater potential to thrive.”
