Dennis Loo, professor of sociology, was published in the winter 2012 issue of Contexts magazine, a quarterly publication of the American Sociological Association. His article, “Does Society Exist?” is featured in the magazine’s “Unplugged” section. Loo reflects on the existence of society which Margaret Thatcher famously dismissed as non-existent, and argues that faculty should become public intellectuals and that his fellow sociologists are well-positioned to confirm that people are primarily social beings, not solitary individuals motivated primarily by material incentives.
