In his first video message of for spring quarter 2011, President Ortiz shares some positive news about the campus’ efforts to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. Since the Cal Poly Pomona Federal Credit Union began accepting donations for the relief efforts about two weeks ago, it has collected more than $2,000.
“And this does not include all of the gifts people made directly to the Red Cross or other aid-based agencies. Thank you for willingness to help the Japanese people during this dire time,” Ortiz says.
Springtime is competition season for many students, including the civil engineers and women’s basketball team. Engineers pitted their concrete canoe against other schools in the annual American Society of Civil Engineers Pacific Southwest Conference. The women’s basketball team had remarkable season, culminating with a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Championships.
“I cannot be more proud of the effort of our women’s basketball program this season, under the leadership of Coach Danelle Bishop,” Ortiz says. “Every faculty, staff and student can take great pride in the accomplishments of these talented student-athletes.”
The president also invites the campus community to the diversity conference, “Only a World Away” on April 5, hosted by the Office of Student Life & Cultural Centers. The conference includes workshops for faculty, staff and students, led by a Chinese-American documentary filmmaker.
