Iris S. Levine, music professor and department chair, was chosen as the recipient of the 2011 CMEA (California Music Educators Association) “John Swain” College/University Music Educator Award. “John Swain, for whom the award is named, was a fantastic instrumental educator at CSULA for many years. He actually helped me quite a bit when I first arrived at Cal Poly,” Levine says. “I am honored to receive this award in his name and especially in the year that we will be able to hire a tenure track faculty person in instrumental music. John passed away a number of years ago, but his legacy lives on.”
