He spoke on “Elder Law and the Tax Practitioner – How to Navigate the Murky Waters.” As the population ages, more senior citizens are moving out of their homes into retirement homes, board and care, assisted living facilities and skilled nursing homes. An elder law attorney has generally been trained in MediCal laws and transferring assets, but also needs to understand the tax implications. Rice’s presentation focused on tax issues relevant to an elder law attorney. Rice also discussed various issues that accountants should address when preparing a return for an elderly couple or client, as well as for the children who may be assisting them either financially or as a caregiver.
