Following a tremendous performance at the American Mock Trial Regional Tournament, Cal Poly Pomona’s mock trial team is heading to the opening round of the National Mock Trial Competition in Irvine. If the Broncos place in the top 6, they will join the best of the western states in Memphis, Tenn., for the nation’s toughest mock trial tournament.
“The Cal Poly Pomona Mock Trial team is having the most successful season yet!” says Adrienne Mendoza, president of the Mock Trial Association. At the regional tournament in February, each member of the Veteran Team received six nods as an Outstanding Attorney and/or Witness during their rounds and each member secured perfect 10 scores in their examinations and witness roles. In addition, Chris Montoya, James Speights and Mendoza received perfect 10 scores for their opening statements or closing arguments.
The Rookie Team also performed well with four wins and four losses. Each team member captured at least one nod for Outstanding Attorney and/or Witness and earned a perfect 10 in individual scores as attorney or witness.
Cal Poly Pomona took home more trophies at regionals than in any previous year. Mendoza earned an Outstanding All-Region Attorney award, first-year competitor Shanda Gordon earned an Outstanding All-Region Attorney award, Ramon Valenzuela won an Outstanding All-Region Witness award, and Liz Gonzalez received an Outstanding All-Region Witness award.
