Needed items include: markers, crayons, highlighters, calculators, bottled water, rulers, folders, spiral notebooks and backpacks.
Staffed by Cal Poly Pomona student volunteers, the Homework Center enters its third year of service for the Pomona community. Elementary school students go to the Pomona library for free help with their schoolwork each week. Many become regulars and develop lasting relationships with their mentors.
Daniel Zeleznik, the AmeriCorps fellow in charge of the center this year, follows the footsteps of Heather Morgan, who ran the center last year, and looks forward to welcoming back returning volunteers and training new recruits.
Major funding for the Homework Assistance Center is provided by AmeriCorps, the Center for Community Service-Learning and the Division of Academic Affairs. Additionally, Staff Council has donated more than $1,800 in school supplies.
