Celebrate education and community at the fourth annual Matthew Myers Memorial 5K Run/Walk at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, Oct. 17 beginning at 8 a.m. Registration is open now.
Matt's Run is held in memory of Matthew Myers, a communication student from La Verne who was struck and killed while walking across a road on campus in 2005. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Matthew Myers Memorial Fund, which awards annual scholarships to outstanding Cal Poly Pomona students.
Matt's Run boasts a USA Track and Field Certified course that takes participants through the university's scenic landscape, past the historic Arabian Horse Center and citrus groves.
Open to runners and walkers of all ages, Matt's Run brings together the university community and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Participants will be entertained by the Bronco Pep Band, Broncettes Dance Team and the Bronco Cheer Squad.
The university's Greek Council has adopted Matt's Run as its philanthropic fundraiser, bringing the support of 1,200 people in 30 chapters to the memorial run. Each chapter will raise funds for the event in addition to contributing volunteers and race participants.
Registration is required. Pre-registration fees are $30 for adults/alumni and $15 for all students (not just from Cal Poly Pomona) with school ID. Day-of-event registration fees are $35 for adults/alumni and $20 for students with school ID. The registration fee includes an event T-shirt, runner ID number, snacks and drinks. T-shirts are not guaranteed for those who register late. Parking is $3 for cars without a Cal Poly Pomona parking permit.
Those who wish to register on the day of the event can do so between 6:30 and 7:45 a.m. Pre-registered competitors may pick up their packets during this time.
An ceremony at 9:30 a.m. will honor the top three finishers in each of the seven age divisions: 12 and under, 13-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and up. Organizers will also present the Myers Cup, a perpetual trophy to be given to the student club Greek organization that shows the most spirit and participation, and raises the most money.
