Professor Emeritus Robert R. Schneider died July 29 at age 85. He served in the Civil Engineering department from 1966 to 1987, including about 10 years as department chair.
Schneider was an expert in the design of masonry structures, and his textbook, “Reinforced Masonry Design,” is still in print.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico in 1946 and his master's degree at USC, where he served on the faculty for several years before coming to Cal Poly Pomona.
After retiring, he moved to New Mexico, where he grew up, and was active in community affairs. He volunteered at Pecos National Monument and was a docent tour guide at the Palace of the Governors.
Schneider is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, Robert, Steven and Mark; two daughters, Linda and Susan; and five grandchildren.
