Parking Fees Increase Begins Summer Quarter

Cal Poly Pomona and Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) will implement a parking fee increase for the 2009-10 academic year, beginning June 11 when summer quarter parking permits go on sale. The new rates are supported by Associated Students, Inc. Student Leadership and reflect the first increase in five years when current rates were set to fund construction of the parking structure.

The increase is necessary to avoid cuts to PTS, which does not receive general fund support and relies solely on permit sales to pay for salaries, operations and maintenance. The fines and forfeitures paid to PTS are, by law, used only to support alternative means of transportation.

In addition to operating and maintaining more than 20 parking lots, the parking structure and nearly 12,000 parking spaces, PTS manages the Rideshare Program, Bronco Express shuttles, Bronco Link, and safety escort services, and it provides roadside assistance, jumping dead batteries and unlocking vehicles. About 600 people participate daily in the Rideshare program, and the two shuttle services are used by 500,000 riders annually.

Over the years, PTS has made a concerted effort to improve services for getting to and around campus in ways that are efficient and environmentally friendly. The Bronco Link shuttles, which debuted in the fall, transport faculty, staff and students to and from the Pomona North and Pomona Downtown Metrolink stations. PTS has added Bronco Express relief drivers to keep the shuttles operating throughout the day. Also, riders can check bus locations and arrival times throughout campus using their cell phone, computer or electronic signs through a new GPS tracking system.

Some employee bargaining units such as CSU Employees Union (Units 2, 5, 7 & 9), UAW -Academic Student Employees (Unit 11), California Faculty Association (Unit 3) and Academic Professionals of California (Unit 4) active members are not subject to the increases for the 2009-10 academic year.
