Billy Bronco celebrated his birthday on April 23. |
Bronco Athletics and University Housing found eco-friendly ways to celebrate Billy Bronco's birthday, which took place on the University's Earth Day festivities on April 23.
Billy and student-athletes collected used athletic shoes for the Nike-Reuse-A-Shoe program, which University Housing is sponsoring on campus. The shoe drive netted about 20 pairs.
“Everyone has a pair of sneakers they no longer wear, but that doesn't mean they're ready to be trashed,” says Lorena Marquez, promotions and game management coordinator. “Our student-athletes enjoy pitching in. And by helping recycle shoes, it helps the environment and in turn, everyone benefits.''
The Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program has recycled more than 22 million pairs of shoes worldwide. The materials are reused for synthetic track and playground surfaces, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, cushioning pads for indoor basketball, athletic mats and shoes.
University Housing will be collecting worn athletic shoes through Friday, May 15. They may be dropped off at University Housing Services in Building 59.
