Expert on Solar Eclipses to Speak

The Physics Department presents Dr. Jay Pasachoff, field memorial professor of astronomy at Williams College, who will speak on Friday, April 17, at 4 p.m. in Building 3-2137 on “Syzygies: Eclipses, Occultations and Transits.” Syzygies are astronomical events that depend on precise alignments of astronomical objects and require observations at specific times. These observations take Dr. Pasachoff, who is at Caltech on sabbatical, to exotic locations such as the Greek Islands and Siberia. In his talk, he will show spectacular photos from his travels of these rare astronomical phenomena and of the events themselves. Pasachoff is chair of the International Astronomical Union's Working Group on Solar Eclipses and is a veteran of 48 solar eclipses. For more information, visit
