Campus Celebrates Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Campus Celebrates Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Students march against domestic violence in a rally last year.

Cal Poly Pomona will host a series of enlightening and educational events during the month of April as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The university joins a national campaign to promote and raise public awareness about sexual violence, and to educate both men and women on how to prevent it. The campus has been honoring Sexual Assault Awareness Month for at least 10 years now.

This year's theme, “I Love Consensual Sex,” was created by the National Organization for Women.

“Roughly 20 to 25 percent of college-aged women will be sexually assaulted within the first six months of their attendance at a university,” says Erika Zepeda, program coordinator for the Violence Prevention & Women's Resource Center, which is hosting the free events. “Because of this national statistic, it's essential that students, staff and faculty are aware of on-campus support services such as our office, the University Police Department, Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services and Judicial Affairs. Collectively the university is working to make access to survivor advocacy better known among those at risk.”

Highlights include the annual march and rally and “Take Back the Night,” a celebration honoring women with a candlelight vigil at sunset.
