Memorial Recital to Benefit Scholarships

Memorial Recital to Benefit Scholarships
The Music Department will hold a memorial concert in honor of Phillip Clarke.

Each year, the Music Department presents a concert dedicated to Dr. Phillip Clarke that benefits the piano program. During his 22 years at the university, Clarke had a profound influence on students, faculty and staff.

The Phillip Clarke Memorial Piano Scholarship Fundraiser will be on Friday, March 6 at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets are $7 and are available at https://csupomona.tix.com, the Music Publicity Office or at the door.

The annual concert was named after Clarke when he passed away in 2004. He was a well-respected and valued educator who directed and initiated benefit performances to raise funds for Music Department scholarships.

Michael Jung is this year's Phillip Clarke Memorial Piano Scholarship recipient. In addition, he was awarded the Eric and Elizabeth Turkel Endowed Scholarship in piano. Other 2008-09 piano scholarship award recipients are Phillip Pitcher, Vanessa Estrada, Brandon Ecks and Shasha Liu.

The concert will feature students and faculty members performing works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Ullmann and Prokofiev. Assistant Professor Nadia Shpachenko is directing the recital.
