|Professor Edward M. Gates|
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, for Mechanical Engineering Professor Edward M. Gates, who died last month. Gates, 58, taught at Cal Poly Pomona for the past 20 years and was killed in a small plane crash in San Diego County.
The memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. in Ursa Minor, Bronco Student Center. The service is open to the entire campus community and the public.
Gates joined Cal Poly Pomona's Mechanical Engineering Department in 1988. An expert in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, he set a high standard for his students and challenged them in their studies.
To continue Gates' legacy at Cal Poly Pomona, an endowment for a scholarship in his honor has been set up in the Mechanical Engineering Department. The scholarship will be given to a student who best exemplifies the traits that Gates was known for: integrity and exhibition of excellence in both theoretical and practical knowledge of science and engineering.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation — Gates Memorial Scholarship. Gifts may be given online at https://e-advancement.cpp.edu/donate/index.html. For donation questions, contact Nikki Khurana at (909) 869-2922 or by e-mail at email@example.com.
