Four staff members received Amelia Hammond/Staff Council Scholarships to help them reach their education goals. Award recipients were honored with a $300 scholarship during a ceremony on Oct. 21.
Amelia Hammond was a Cal Poly Pomona staff employee from 1962 to 1980. She served on Staff Council and founded the scholarship program in 1978 for employees pursuing higher education. Hammond died in June 2003, and the awards continue in her memory.
Each year, Staff Council raises scholarship funds through the Staff Council Valentine's Day drawing. Scholarship recipients must use the funds for career development or personal job improvement education that is not covered by release time or fee waiver programs. Courses may be taken at community colleges, colleges, universities or technical schools.
This year's scholarship award recipients are:
Kathy Byrum, development coordinator in the College of Business Administration. Byrum's long-term goal is to complete her education so she can pursue a career in University Advancement as a Development Associate/Director of Development. She hopes to help enhance the “learn by doing” philosophy through philanthropic efforts at Cal Poly Pomona.
Jame'l Hodges, coordinator of Residential Leadership & Education in University Housing Services. Hodges is fully immersed in his doctoral studies at USC, where is working on his Ed.D in higher education. He hopes to become a vice president for Student Affairs in the future.
Laura Valdez, administrative assistant and receptionist in the Academic Affairs Division office. She is pursuing her associate's degree in speech and language pathology. Valdez is also working to obtain certification to work as a speech and language pathologist assistant and earn a bachelor's degree in communication disorders.
Tessie Vaughn, administrative support coordinator in Orientation Services. Vaughn is working to achieve her educational goals by completing coursework towards a bachelor's degree in organizational management at the University of La Verne. Her long-term goal is to earn a master's degree in business or public administration from Cal Poly Pomona.
