The road that runs directly in front of the CLA Building will be re-named in a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The campus community is invited to attend the circle naming. This marks the 12th annual Bronco Circle Naming Unveiling Ceremony and honors Emma Hilario, a 1984 MBA graduate of Cal Poly Pomona who served as President of the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association in 2003-2004 and has been a board member since 2001.
Last year's winner, Ron Simons, will be on hand to receive his sign — Simons Circle — which has been on the post for the past year.
Hilario made the winning bid in a live auction for the street naming at this year's Southern California Tasting & Auction, held May 4. The funds went toward much-needed student-athlete scholarships. Last year's winning bidders, Arthur and Sarah Ludwick, chose to have the circle named in honor of Simons, who has been a fixture on campus for more than 45 years.
University President Michael Ortiz and Director of Athletics Brian Swanson will take part in the ceremony.
The university began dedicating the circle in 1997 to support student-athletes and scholarships. This past academic year, there were 655 student-athlete opportunities to achieve a 3.0 or higher grade point average. Bronco student-athletes accomplished the feat 328 times — a better than 50 percent rate for the three quarters. The department's overall grade point average for the 2007-2008 academic year was a best-ever 2.93 for the more than 230 Bronco student-athletes.
