The 2007-08 basketball teams at Cal Poly Pomona are experiencing March Madness this week as both teams qualified for the semifinal round of the CCAA basketball tournament. Both teams upset their opponents Tuesday night and on the road, no less.
For the women, seventh-seed Cal Poly Pomona defeated No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino 57-52 behind senior Vanessa Dominguez' 17 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She was joined by freshman Reyana Colson and junior Andrea Ohlssen, who scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. The victory was the Broncos' first over the Coyotes this season, after dropping the two regular-season games.
The eighth-seeded men's team pulled a stunner Tuesday night with a 73-70 victory over top seed and conference co-champion Humboldt State. The Broncos, who lost at Humboldt State last Friday night, remained in the Arcata area over the weekend and topped the Lumberjacks in their final game played at East Gym.
Senior Angelo Tsagarakis led the Broncos with 17 points and junior Larry Gordon reached double figures for the 26th time this season with 13. Senior Kevin Neveu also scored 13 points and senior Kaelen Daniels added 12.
Both teams will participate in the semifinal round of the tournament, played at Cal State San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena on Friday. The women (12-15) face CCAA regular-season champion Chico State (25-5), which is ranked No. 18 in the country. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. Chico State won both meetings this season
The men (12-14) face Cal State Dominguez Hills (17-10) at 8 p.m. Friday. The Toros won both games this season.
The title games will be played Saturday night. The women's final will be at 5 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m. An NCAA West Region tournament bid is awarded to the winners.
Also, the CCAA announced its all-conference teams Wednesday and both Bronco teams were well represented. Colson was named the women's freshman of the year and joined Dominguez on the second team.
Gordon earned first-team honors for the men and Tsagarakis was named to the second team.
