College of Engineering professor Dr. Robert L. Bernick, passed away last week. Known to friends and colleagues simply as Bob, he taught in the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) department at Cal Poly Pomona for nearly 30 years, starting out as a part-time lecturer in 1979. His specialty was teaching electronics and semiconductor physics courses.

Bernick received his undergraduate degree in math, graduating suma cum laude at the University of Minnesota. He later obtained his Master of Science at UC Berkley, and his Ph.D. at USC, both in physics. Bernick also had considerable practical work experience, having worked as an engineer at General Electric, Hughes Aircraft and North American Aviation during his early career.

Before his untimely death at age 69, Bernick established a $25,000 endowment fund aimed at revitalizing ECE department's labs, which he felt needed to be modernized.

Bernick is survived by his wife Joan; daughters Elizabeth and Elena; and son Andrew. The Bernick family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends and alumni send contributions to help build the endowment fund that Bernick recently established in the name of his parents  The Leslie and Zena Bernick Endowment Fund, c/o of the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering. Donations would support the ECE department.
