After 16 years with Cal Poly Pomona, Glenda Brock, a George P. Hart Award for Outstanding Faculty Leadership recipient and founder of the university's Ombuds Office, has announced her retirement.
Brock first came to Cal Poly Pomona in September 1992 as an accounting professor in the College of Business Administration. Over the years she has filled several leadership roles such as chair of the department of Accounting, faculty associate of Undergraduate Studies, Academic Senate chair and university Ombuds.
She plans to return to her native Tennessee this spring. Many people believe retirement is when the vacation starts. That may not be the case for Brock.
“My mother in Memphis told everyone that I was on vacation in California. So I suppose I will be ending a 16 year vacation in California,” she says. “I am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve in many capacities at Cal Poly Pomona. Most importantly, I know so many wonderful and interesting students, faculty, staff and administrators who are stored in my memory to recall on those hot humid days or those cold frosty days in Tennessee.”
In the past two years, Brock has been instrumental in starting the university's Ombuds Office, which offers confidential, neutral, independent, and informal assistance in resolving your issues, problems, or concerns. The office serves all members of the Cal Poly Pomona campus including students, faculty, staff and administrators.
“When I think about people who have worked to make a difference for Cal Poly Pomona, Glenda immediately comes to mind,” says President Michael Ortiz. “She has served as a distinguished member of our faculty, committed her time as chair of the Academic Senate, and built a great foundation for our new Ombuds Office. This university is a better place because of her efforts.”
A date to celebrate her career is being scheduled and should be announced in the coming weeks. A national search is currently underway to find her successor.
