Keyboardist Michael Garson to perform at Cal Poly Pomona
Michael Garson will be in concert Feb. 15.

Michael Garson, a versatile and prolific keyboardist, will give a free noontime lecture and an evening concert in the Music Recital Hall on Thursday, Feb. 15.

Garson's career, which has spanned more than 30 years, has taken him in many creative directions. He has traveled the world playing several tours with David Bowie and has written numerous scores for movies and television.

“If I am truly passionate about what I do, that feeling can inspire people who receive my art,” Garson has said. “As a musician I'm not concerned with whether I play jazz, rock, classical, or pop so long as it's creative.”

Garson has recorded 14 solo albums including Serendipity, Admiration, Avant Garson, Gershwin Fantasia and Jazzical.

His work can also be heard on albums by Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and No Doubt.

“It is pointless to talk about his ability as a pianist; he is exceptional,” David Bowie has said of Garson. “However, there are very, very few musicians, let alone pianists, who naturally understand the movement and free thinking necessary to hurl themselves into experimental or traditional areas of music, sometimes, ironically, at the same time. Mike does this with such enthusiasm that it makes my heart glad just to be in the same room with him.”

Advance tickets for the Feb. 15 concert titled “Works by Michael Garson and Live Improvisations” may be purchased at the Music Publicity Office in Bldg. 24, room 142. Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for nonstudents. The concert starts at 8 p.m.
