The Student Development & Leadership Institute is offering a new program designed for first-year students at Cal Poly Pomona.
Since the summer of 2003, SDLI has become an umbrella for leadership networking and resources at the university. The institute offers co-curricular education, development and training to enhance students' leadership abilities.
“SDLI has helped me plan events for my organization, Zeta Tau Alpha,” says communications major Kimberly Scatton. “The leadership training helped me utilize what Cal Poly Pomona has to offer.”
In the last three years the institute has fine-tuned its Leadership Workshop Series to include five specialized areas that focus on academics, career development, human relations, organizational development and personal development. There are also specialized tracks that include ASI student government, Greek leadership and residential leadership.
Earlier this fall, SDLI began offering an additional program designed to help new students become acclimated to the university while also building their leadership skills.
First Year Experience (FYE) is a workshop series that runs through May. Students who complete seven workshops during their first year at Cal Poly Pomona are awarded a certificate of completion and are welcome to attend a luncheon on May 22.
FYE is one of the initiatives sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs designed to create opportunities for learning, skill development and community building among first-year students.
The workshop topics include: defining leadership, personal money management, choosing a major, tools for academic success, conflict management and several more.
Numerous workshops will be offered throughout the academic year, giving students ample time to participate in at least seven.
