Gary Hamilton, a member of the Cal Poly Pomona community since 1991, has been named interim dean for the College of the Extended University. He will formally begin his new charge on Dec. 4.
“I appreciate the confidence of the provost in my ability to assume the multifaceted responsibilities of this position,” Hamilton says. “Joining the College of the Extended University is a terrific opportunity to continue working with colleagues in the Division of Academic Affairs and to join the hard working professionals at the CEU to provide enhanced services to students, the university community and the businesses of the greater Inland Empire.”
The professor and special assistant to the Provost has expertise in areas such as human resource management, strategic planning, leadership and law. Prior to joining Cal Poly Pomona as an assistant professor and later the founding associate dean of the Collins School, Hamilton served as a corporate legal advisor and assistant director of Human Resources and Labor Relations for the Sands Hotel, Casino and Country Club in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
“Gary will be an excellent addition to the College of the Extended University,” said Provost Tomás Morales. “His leadership skills and experience will be a great resource for the CEU team and the entire university.”
In his first year at Cal Poly Pomona, Hamilton was honored with the Meritorious Performance and Professional Promise Award, followed by the American Institute of Wine and Food's Chapter award as Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1991 and 1992. He was again selected Outstanding Professor in the Collins School in 1991-92, 1997-98, 2002-03, 2003-04, and 2004-05 and has been honored as one of the university's Outstanding Academic Advisors in 1993-94 and again in 1997-1998.
Hamilton is a published author and has provided numerous seminars and consultations to diverse clients including the National Restaurant Association, Donald Trump's Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino, the Club Managers Association of America, the Graduate School of Nursing at the Medical College of Ohio, Hilton International, Lawry's Restaurants and Los Angeles World Airports.
He had served Cal Poly Pomona as special assistant to the vice president for Finance and Development in 1991, special assistant to the university president 1992-1995 and coordinator of University Strategic Planning from 1992-94. Prior to his appointment as interim dean with the College of Extended University, he served as special assistants to the Office of the Provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.
