Cal Poly Pomona to Participate in National Intelligence Program

Cal Poly Pomona is one of seven California State University campuses to earn a multi-year, multi-million dollar grant from the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence to develop an Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence.

Cal State San Bernardino will be the lead for the consortium of the seven campuses, which include Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Northridge.

The Center of Academic Excellence will shape curricular programs on the seven designated campuses to help students with language acquisition, critical thinking and writing, foreign studies, GIS-related skills, national security and intelligence studies, and graduate studies in related programs.

Professor Mark T. Clark, director of the National Security Studies program at Cal State San Bernardino, will manage the grant provided through the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. CSUSB will serve as the host campus for the Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence. Cal State San Bernardino is expected to receive a grant of more than $3 million over five years.

CSU students participating in the program will have the opportunity to earn funding to participate in summer travel abroad programs.

The center will also develop summer institute outreach programs for high school students. Clark said that the high school outreach efforts will encourage students to graduate from school and prepare for college by providing them with seminars and information sessions on regional studies, cultures, languages and technology.

The 2004 Intelligence Reform Act mandated the Intelligence Community to reach out to the academy and encourage the study of languages, cultures, good writing and thinking as part of the larger effort to be better prepared for the future.
