Cal Poly Pomona's women's volleyball team dug down deep to earn a milestone victory for its veteran coach.
The Broncos fought off Humboldt State's strong challenge to stay in the match and swept the Lumberjacks, 30-20, 30-27, 34-32 Saturday night in Darlene May Gym.
The victory was the 600th career win for Cal Poly Pomona coach Rosie Wegrich. She becomes just the seventh active coach in Division II to reach that milestone. She now has 271 of those wins at Cal Poly Pomona and was the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2005.
The Broncos survived a topsy-turvy third game. Humboldt State fought off three match points and then saw the Broncos survive a pair of Lumberjack game points. The Broncos pulled to 32-32 on a kill by Vanessa Williams, took a 33-32 lead on an Humboldt State attack error and won the match on another kill by Williams.
Williams had 14 kills and four blocks to lead Cal Poly Pomona (9-14, 6-12) to its second straight victory. Katie Norkunas had 11 kills, three aces and 12 digs for the Lumberjacks (8-14, 5-13), while Kristen Kinzer had 10 kills and four blocks.
The Broncos honored seniors Tina Jones and Casey Riedel before the match, which was the final home contest of the season for Cal Poly Pomona. Riedel had 11 kills and 13 digs, while Jones had 18 set assists and two service aces.
The Broncos started quickly and won the first game easily. The second game was much more competitive and a long serving run by Courtney Lee erased a 20-13 Bronco advantage and tied the frame up at 20-20. Lindsey Adams had four kills during an 8-0 Humboldt State spurt.
A pair of kills by Jenna Young (So., Arcadia, Arcadia HS) broke a 27-27 tie and the Broncos won the second game on a ball-handling error by the Lumberjacks.
The Broncos opened up a 21-17 lead in the third frame on a kill by Antoinette Kathol only to see Humboldt State rally. Cal Poly Pomona had a 29-27 lead, buta kill by Megahn Berndt and an ace by Olivia Solomon tied the game at 29-29. The Broncos took a 30-29 lead after an attack error by the Lumberjacks, but a kill by Lynsee Adams tied it up. The Lumberjacks took a 31-30 lead on an ace by Berndt, but the Broncos came back with a block by Kathol and Samantha Casey. A kill by Kinzer gave the Lumberjacks a 32-31 lead, but a kill by Williams tied it, an attack error gave the Broncos match point and a Williams' kill finished it.
