This summer, Cal Poly Pomona 44 employees participated in the popular Staff Development Academy I (SDAI) as well the newly offered Staff Development Academy II (SDAII).
Since SDAI started in August 2002, 255 staff members have completed the program.
The three-day interactive program covers topics including effective verbal and written communication, customer service, time management and teamwork. The most recent SDAI took place on Aug. 1, 2 and 3.
Past participants in SDAI were so enthusiastic about the program that they requested a follow-up program to build on key concepts learned in the first one, says Susan Berilla, director of Organizational Development & Training.
Based on the feedback, SDAII was created to address communication and team building in greater depth. In order to stimulate on-the-job application of skills learned, SDAII was designed to span one and a half days about a month apart. Between the first and second sessions, participants completed assignments to reflect on and utilize skills and knowledge gained. The second session included a debriefing of lessons learned and a motivational speaker. Like SDAI, graduates of the program were presented with a certificate signed by President Michael Ortiz. SDAII took place on July 11 and Aug. 15.
