The California State University is urging faculty to identify and sponsor promising junior, senior and first-year graduate students, especially those from underrepresented groups in their fields, for the California Pre-Doctoral Program.

The program is designed to increase the pool of potential faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages.

Students are selected by a committee of faculty from the CSU and the UC. Each of the applicants selected will be designated a Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar and will work closely with a faculty sponsor to develop a plan leading to enrollment in a doctoral program. Each plan is tailored to the individual career and educational goals of the student. The program places special emphasis on increasing the number of CSU students who enter doctoral programs at the University of California.

Under the guidance of the faculty adviser, students will receive funding to become acquainted with information about academic careers, appropriate journal subscriptions and learning experiences. Travel funds will allow the student and faculty sponsor to visit U.S. doctoral-granting institutions and an opportunity to apply for a fully funded summer research internship in doctoral-level work.

All student and faculty sponsor applications must be received at the Office of Undergraduate Studies, CLA Building T7-9, by Thursday, March 30.
