Cal Poly Pomona’s cheer team picked up a top honor at a summer camp in Santa Barbara.
The Broncos earned a Superior Award, the top honor that can be earned, at the 2005 Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Camp on Aug. 12-14 in Santa Barbara.
Cal Poly Pomona cheer captain Jo Anne Avelar said the 10-member coed squad earned Superior ratings in four of five categories and took home the Superior Award for the most improved squad at the camp.
“We thought they were talking about SLO (Cal Poly Pomona San Luis Obispo) when they announced the award,” Avelar said. “We did not expect to leave with a trophy. When we realized it was us, we all screamed.”
The Broncos were among hundreds of cheerleaders from more than 75 collegiate teams,
including the University of New Mexico, University of Arizona, UC Davis, Sacramento State and UC San Diego.
