Cal Poly Pomona Foundation Inc. Dining Services has been honored with a national award for the Los Olivos Dining Commons Diwali-themed menu from November 2004. The dining facility received a second place Loyal E. Horton Dining Award in the category of theme dinner from the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS).

The Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards are named after a founder of NACUFS and one of the worlds first registered dietitians. The annual awards salute the most successful ideas in menus, presentations, special event planning and new dining concepts.

Cal Poly Pomona's Dining Services was one of more than 180 college food services evaluated by NACUFS for menu selection, nutritional soundness, marketing, merchandising and presentation, and overall impression.

Each of the competing dining services submitted a scrapbook portfolio including photographs of the authentic menu and entertainment, copies of food production sheets, nutritional information, samples of recipes, marketing materials, evidence of employee involvement in the event and student feedback.

Los Olivos submitted a scrapbook portfolio highlighting its 2004 Diwali-themed meal, celebrating the Hindu Festival of Lights. Los Olivos celebrated the rich culture of India by immersing diners in the sights, sounds, aromas and tastes of India.

“We are proud to have received such a prestigious award,” says Annette Pettit, associate director of Foundation Dining Services. “This event offered an opportunity to learn about the richly beautiful traditions of another culture, not only for our campus community, but for our staff and NACUFS as well.”
