Several areas of campus have been hit with spam messages in English and German that direct recipients to Web sites containing propaganda from certain German nationalistic groups. This new worm has been labeled W32/Sober.q@MM. Although most users infected by the worm are only seeing mail boxes crowded with spam, once a machine is infected it could be taken over, potentially launching attacks on other computers. Instructional & Information Technology staff members have visited individual work stations infected with this worm and have developed a method to repair the settings on infected machines. Details on the worm, and methods to clean infected machines and protect them for future attacks, are at available at www.cpp.edu/~iit/division/news.shtml. |
