Brian Swanson Named Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson will begin as director of Athletics on May 31.

Brian Swanson has been chosen as Cal Poly Pomona's new director of Athletics in the division of Student Affairs. His appointment begins May 31.

“Brian will be an outstanding addition to the university,” says Gary Fredericksen, interim vice president for Student Affairs. “His broad experience in athletics will only enhance a very successful program.”

Swanson currently serves as associate director of intercollegiate athletics at Cal State L.A., where he began in July 1999. In this position, he is directly responsible for operation budgets, supervision, direction and evaluation of six sports programs. Swanson also in charge of developing and maintaining the department's corporate sponsorships and fund-raising efforts as well as coordinating special projects and events.

“I am looking forward to becoming a member of the Cal Poly Pomona family,” says Swanson. “The program's success both academically and athletically are attributed to the committed Bronco student-athletes and an outstanding and dedicated group of coaches and staff.”

Prior to his associate director position, Swanson served as assistant athletic director for external affairs at Cal State Northridge. He also served as director of business operations at the Rio Grande Plantation in Puerto Rico and as a stockbroker for Edward D. Jones & Company.

Swanson earned a masters degree in sports administration from Western Illinois University and a bachelors degree in business administration-finance from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University). He is a member of the Executive Council of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, serving on the Administrative Committee.

He will replace Glenn Shenker, who has served as the interim director of Athletics since June 2003. Shenker will return to his former assistant director of Athletics position.

Swanson, and his wife, Julie, reside in Huntington Beach.
