Construction of a vehicular bridge from South Campus Drive to Valley Boulevard and an extension of Kellogg Drive has been rescheduled to reach completion on Jan. 10, 2005. Construction was originally scheduled to wrap up on Dec. 19. The construction project, ultimately allowing better access to the university's Innovation Village, will temporarily impact on-campus traffic at the intersections of Kellogg Drive and South Campus Drive. The road construction is part of the Innovation Village infrastructure project. Innovation Village is a 65-acre mixed-use technology park featuring the American Red Cross as the anchor tenant. The Red Cross facility is currently under construction and slated to open in February. Facilities Design & Construction has announced the intersection modifications will be performed in three stages and will include the following lane closures:
South Campus Drive: The two extreme outer lanes will be closed from Temple Avenue to approximately 100 feet north of Kellogg Drive. Note: One lane will remain open to provide southbound through traffic to Temple Avenue. One lane will remain open to provide through northbound traffic to Kellogg Drive, and one lane will remain open to provide through northbound traffic to I-10. Kellogg Drive: The two extreme outer lanes will be closed from approximately 200 feet north of South Campus Drive. Note: The two remaining lanes will be left open to provide one-lane, each direction, for through traffic (one lane to enter campus and a right- and left-turn lane to exit campus).
South Campus Drive: Only a portion of the northbound middle lane (one of the two left-turn lanes) will be closed. All remaining lanes will be reopened for through traffic each direction. Kellogg Drive: A portion of the two inner lanes will be closed from approximately 200 feet north of South Campus Drive. The remaining lanes will be reopened for through traffic each direction (one lane to enter campus and a right and a left turn lane to exit campus).
South Campus Drive: Street closed at Temple Avenue (only local access and bus traffic will be permitted). Kellogg Drive: All lanes of the intersection will be closed to through traffic. Through traffic to and from campus will be re-routed to University Drive, Eucalyptus Lane or East Campus Drive. Phase 1 of the Innovation Village infrastructure project includes the construction of a vehicular bridge over the existing San Jose Flood Control Channel and an extension of Kellogg Drive with perimeter landscaped setbacks and parkways, new signalization at Valley Boulevard, signal modifications at the intersections of Kellogg Drive and South Campus Dive, and wet and dry utilities. Modifications to the intersection of Kellogg Drive and South Campus Drive include expanding it from a three-way intersection to a four-way intersection with new four-way street signalization. An additional right-turn-only lane onto South Campus Drive will be created, along with new curb and gutter, concrete sidewalk and a Handicap access ramp. The intersection will also receive new asphalt concrete paving, street striping and landscaping, five new replacement trees and modifications to the existing irrigation system. The intersection of Kellogg Drive and South Campus Drive will reopen to all traffic at 6 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, 2005.
