Some schoolchildren and their parents believe a college education is out of reach and unfeasible. However, a group of International Business & Marketing (IBM) students are working to break that misconception through the Rock Your Future campaign, which made a recent stop at Marshall Middle School in Pomona. Rock Your Future encourages, motivates and educates high school and middle school students about the accessibility of higher education.
Through a partnership with the College Preparation Seminar, a panel of specialists is brought to the local schools to demystify college. The panelists provide to the children as well as their parents tips on planning for college and staying motivated, and emphasize the importance of earning good grades in their classes.
The marketing students then follow-up with visits to classrooms. Through these more personalized exchanges, they reinforce the importance of education, share their college experiences and encourage students to study, earn good grades and set goals.
The Rock Your Future event on April 21 at Marshall Middle School in Pomona proved to be a success with more than 350 students, parents and educators in attendance. Cal Poly Pomona?s IBM students have already been invited to return to the middle school next year.
?This is a win-win project,? says Joyce Emilio, a lecturer in the International Business & Marketing department who advises the marketing group. ?We are trying to build hope and a vision for the future that will motivate these students to reach higher, be better students, and be more prepared for college and employment. Our students benefit because they gain more experience making presentations, polish their interpersonal skills and learn the importance of giving back to the community.?
