University Celebrates Women's History Month


The ReEntry & WoMen?s Resource Center and other campus organizations will host a series of events in March celebrating Women?s History Month, themed ?Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility.?

The following events are scheduled:

  • March 1 ? The university will celebrate Women of Color Day from noon to 2 p.m. in the W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery. Participants will discuss ?Developing Unity Among Women of Color.? Refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by the Women?s Herstory Month Planning Committee.
  • March 1 ? ?The Edge of Each Others Battles: The Vision of Audre Lorde,? a film viewing and discussion on the late author and poet laureate Audre Lorde, who was instrumental in the development of feminism in the United States, will be from 8-9:30 p.m. in Encinitas Hall, Building 20. Refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by University Housing Services.
  • March 2 ? ?The Edge of Each Others Battles: The Vision of Audre Lorde,? a film viewing and discussion on the late author and poet laureate Audre Lorde, who was instrumental in the development of feminism in the United States, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Minor Room. Filmmaker and artist Jennifer Abod will join in the discussion. Refreshments will be served. This event is cosponsored by ReEntry & Women?s Resource Center, African American Student Center and Pride Center.
  • March 3 ? Campus Forum on ?Assisting the Enslaved in the Land of the Free: Human Trafficking in the U.S.A.? will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Major Room. Joy Zarembke, director of the Institute for Policy Studies? Migrant Domestic Worker?s Rights, will raise attention to the plight of migrant domestic workers. This event is cosponsored by the Campus Forum Series and the National Organization for Women (NOW).
  • March 3 ? ?The Pigment of Your Imagination: Race and Biracial Identity,? a discussion by Zarembke on racial notions and racial identity in the U.S., will be from 1-2 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, England Evans Room. This event is co-sponsored by NOW and Women & Race Dialogue.
  • March 3 ? A free women?s self-defense workshop teaching life-saving techniques will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Major Room C. This event is sponsored by the Stop Violence Office. To RSVP, call (909) 869-3102.
  • March 4 ? Women?s Perspective Poetry Reading will be from 8-10 p.m. at Java the Hut, Building 71. Refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by University Housing Services.
  • March 5 ? ?Real Men Cook,? a fund-raising dinner to benefit women?s scholarships, will be from 6-9 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, Ursa Minor Room. Cal Poly Pomona men volunteered to organize an evening of food an entertainment for women as part of Women?s History Month. Executive chef Art Haga will be coordinating the dinner. Tickets cost $25 and include a commemorative gift. This event is sponsored by Foundation Dining Services.
  • March 8 ? International Women?s Day will be celebrated with an interactive discussion by international students from noon to 1 p.m. in Building 1, Room 104. Refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by the International Center.
  • March 9 ? Go Betty Go alternative rock band will perform from 12-1 p.m. in the University Park. This event is sponsored by the Associated Students Inc. Bronco Events and Activities Team (BEAT).
  • March 11 ? ?Women on the Front Lines: Voices from Grassroots Communities,? a discussion on current local and global events led by Margaret Prescod, cofounder of Global Women?s Strike will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center, Orion AB. This event is cosponsored by ReEntry & WoMen?s Resource Center, NOW and the ?2nd Fridays? Women?s Leadership Group.
  • March 30 ? ?The Mankillers,? a Native American women?s drumming group, will perform from noon to 1 p.m. in the University Quad. This event is sponsored by the Women?s Herstory Month Planning Committee.
  • March 30 ? ?Girls Nite In? from 5-8 p.m. at Java the Hut, Building 71. Enjoy henna tattoos or an office chair massage, learn to knit/crochet a funky scarf and watch a ?Sex and the City? marathon.
