I wanted to share with the entire campus community my sincere appreciation for all of your efforts on BroncoFusion. The event proved to be a huge success, showcasing Cal Poly Pomona in its most positive light. More than 1,000 new students, most of them commuters, registered to attend mixers and workshops, buy parking permits and textbooks, acquire their Bronco ID, enjoy dinner with faculty and attend a special concert.
The concept of BroncoFusion actually came from the Transition and First-Year Experience sub-committee of the Enrollment Management Advisory Council (EMAC). Jennifer Schufer of the Visitor & Information Center and Rebecca Gutierrez Keeton of the Office of Student Life & Cultural Centers were co-chairs, but received tremendous support from faculty, staff, students (volunteers in the hundreds) and administration. Every area of Cal Poly Pomona played an important role. Maybe the highest praise was heard from continuing students who asked, “Why didn?t you do this when I was a new student?”
President Ortiz welcomed the students, reminded them that they are the center of the university, and pledged the institution?s support towards their retention, academic success and graduation. He also charged each of them with being proactive in seeking assistance and active in university life.
BroncoFusion is the type of event that enables Cal Poly Pomona to stand out, validating our student-centered philosophy and approach. Publicly, I want to thank everyone who made this program a great success.
We look forward to this event being part of our fall schedule in 2004.
